On Wednesday, March 26th, 2021 a man reportedly went to three different spas in Atlanta, Georgia, and shot and killed eight people. Out of the eight killed, six people were Asian women; the man told the police he was trying to eliminate his “temptation” which was caused by a “sexual addiction.”

The attack has sprouted further conversations about the rise in hate crimes towards Asians over the past year. In a study performed by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, it was found that in 2020 the number of Anti-Asian hate crimes rose by almost 150% in the 16 of the largest cities, while the number of overall hate crimes dropped by 7%. In some cities, the rise of these crimes was even more exorbitant, such as in New York where they rose by 833%.

The rise of these attacks is partly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, with influential political figures publicly blaming the global disaster on China and continuously calling it “Kung-flu.”
