CODA
“CODA” made cinematic history this past Sunday night at the 94th Academy Awards. The film is now a must-watch for film buffs, your average movie watcher or anyone looking for something to stream. While it may not necessarily be the most talked about thing from that night, its awards and history-making are well worth mentioning.
Plot
This comedy-drama focuses on the hearing daughter of a deaf family. At only 17 years old, Ruby Rossi, played by Emilia Jones, makes an effort to help support her family by working mornings before school. She is also trying her best to support her parents and brothers fishing business. Once she joins her high school’s choir club, she becomes engrossed in her passion for singing and her duet partner.
Award Recognition
During the 94th Academy Awards, “CODA” and the people involved made history. It became the first film to win Best Picture that was released by a streaming platform rather than a typical movie studio. It became the first Sundance movie to win Best Picture. Troy Kotsur, who plays Frank Rossi, became the first deaf man to win an Oscar. Marlee Matlin was the first woman and first deaf person to win an Oscar. She won for her performance in “Children of a Lesser God” 35 years ago.
Other Notable Wins From Sunday Night
Some other notable wins from Sunday night include: Director Jane Campion won her first directing award for “Power of the Dog.” This makes her the third woman to win in the Best Director category. “Dune” won six Oscars in categories such as editing and production design. Will Smith won Best Actor for his performance in “King Richard.” This was shortly after he slapped Chris Rock, who made an insensitive comment about Smith’s wife. After a two year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oscars returned more eventful than ever.
