New York Fashion Week places emphasis on designers of clothes however, Los Angeles-based accessories designer Mehera Blum of Blumera debuted a line of delicate accessories on Feb. 17, 2021.

The Meaning Behind Blumera’s Collection: Conference of the Birds

Presented in a video, which you can find on their website, the collection is shown behind the sound of a poem. The poem is reading from Mehera’s late mother, Laurie Blum, and her book, Language of the Birds. It Is All The Mirror of God. The video combined with the words of the poem was a beautiful reflection of the collection. Driven by nature, the collection of brass, intricate handbags and accessories is meant to show “elements of the earth in sustainable harmonious ways.”

The poem was read by Uzo Aduba, a Nigerian-American actress, who received one of Blumera’s handbags to wear when she won her first Emmy. Their friendship and close relationships with their mothers give the collaboration a deeper meaning than just showcasing a collection.

The nature element of the collection did not end at the design. Blumera finds importance in the idea of sustainability in the creation of their accessories. According to their website, Blumera begins production at the sale of their product and aims to reduce the waste caused by many fast fashion companies. Not only do they want to create “uplifting, wearing art,” but they want it to leave no ecological footprint behind. With the use of upcycled materials like wood and brass, their mission is to represent the beauty of nature without actually taking from it.

The Collection

Blumera’s 2021 collection is a continuation of her signature brass handbags. Using brass and intricate details, the handbags portray the story of nature and are a reflection of how you can connect fashion to the world. Each piece is hand-carved and features unique details such as a lipstick holder or new ways to wear the handbags.

Many celebrities have worn Blumera’s hand-carved brass bags. These celebrities include Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Jessica Alba, Laverne Cox, Dreezy and more. Blum’s bags are meant to be physically pieces of art that can be worn with everyday or red carpet looks.

The intricate pieces sustainably made along with their presentation was an encapsulation of the meaning behind the collection. An hommage to Blum’s mother and her love for the beauty of nature allowed this collection to really reflect its inspiration.
