Yayoi Kusama Announces Exhibition At David Zwirner Gallery

David Zwirner Gallery has announced an upcoming exhibition by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama titled “I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers” in New York. The exhibition will feature new sculptures, new paintings, and a new Infinity Mirror Room. Taking place across the gallery’s three locations on West 19th Street from May 12th to July 30th.

This exhibition will mark ten years since Kusama’s first solo show with David Zwirner in 2013. Additionally, it will be one of her largest gallery exhibitions to date.

Kusama is known for her use of repetitive elements, such as dots. Evoking microscopic and macroscopic universes, as well as its highly personal and recognizable style.

Her works include paintings, performances, room-size presentations, outdoor sculptural installations. As well as literary works, films, fashion, design, and interventions within existing architectural structures.

The Exhibition

The exhibition is named after three large flower sculptures. Titled “I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers”, and displaying at 519 West 19th Street. The sculptures take inspiration from Kusama’s fascination with the natural world and aim to immerse viewers in the atmosphere of a lush garden. At 533 West 19th Street, there will be three massive undulating pumpkin sculptures that showcase Kusama’s characteristic polka dots.

The exhibition will also feature thirty-six paintings, most of which are from Kusama’s recent series “Every Day I Pray for Love”. The paintings use repetition of shapes and brushwork to explore the boundaries between abstraction and figuration.

The highlight of the exhibition will be a new Infinity Mirror Room titled “Dreaming of Earth’s Sphericity, I Would Offer My Love” (2023) at 525 West 19th Street. Featuring round-colored windows that let in natural and artificial light. Creating an immersive space that flows and changes with the interplay of bodies.

Kusama has gained international recognition for her avant-garde art since the 1960s. Her unique perspective on the world has made her one of the most influential artists of twenty-first centuries.

Overall, “I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers” promises to be a testament to Kusama’s endurance and the continued interest in her work. By showcasing her signature motifs and exploring new ideas, Kusama continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art.
