Fall’s Here, So Let’s Talk About the Song of the Summer

We may have been socially distant for the summer of 2020, but music kept us connected with fresh hits to ignite the scorching temperatures of the season. As we wave a tearful goodbye to warm weather, let’s reflect on the top tracks that dominated the last few months counting down to the song of the summer.

8.) “Tap In” – Saweetie

Everything Saweetie touches is icy. This track inspired by Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle” was a necessary turn-up for the summer, an anthem especially for women capitalizing on the “icy girl” movement created by the artist herself. The song also further popularized the phrase “tap in” which is another way of saying “hit my phone line.”

7.) “Toosie Slide” – Drake

Drake blessed the charts once again and crafted another summer hit to debut at number 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. He even inspired a dance challenge for everyone to learn through his lyrics making it the perfect TikTok material. This song was definitely one for the books which encouraged people to get up and moving from their homes in the age of isolation.

6.) “Say So” – Doja Cat feat. Nicki Minaj

This upbeat 70s inspired hit from new artist Doja Cat became very captivating with a melodic chorus and clever flirtatious verses making it destined to reach success. The original version of this hit was already making waves earlier in the year, and it wasn’t until the beginning of May when the rap queen, Nicki Minaj, hopped on the remix version helping it peak at number 1 on Billboard. A TikTok dance challenge was even inspired by the track making it spread further in popularity.

5.) “WHATS POPPIN” – Jack Harlow feat. DaBaby, Tory Lanez & Lil Wayne

One of the biggest collaborations of the summer brought us this hit which is best known for the piano keys inspired beat. The track features new rap artist Jack Harlow along with hitmaker DaBaby, Tory Lanez, and the legend himself Lil Wayne. It peaked at the top of Billboard’s Rhythmic Songs Airplay chart in July.

4.) “Rain On Me” – Lady Gaga feat. Ariana Grande

This song was definitely a historical moment for pop music as two of the most successful pop artists Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande came together to hydrate the summer with this up tempo hit. This was a long overdue collaboration that resulted in nothing but success as it peaked at number 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in early June.

3.) “Rockstar” – DaBaby & Roddy Ricch

Hit after hit DaBaby never stops making classics. Of course a collaboration with new artist Roddy Ricch would be a great success who’s album “Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial” made history earlier this year for being the first debut album to top the Billboard 200 chart for 4 weeks since 2003.

2.) “Blinding Lights” – The Weeknd

This 80s inspired up tempo track from the grammy award winning artist is still making history. It recently broke the Billboard Hot 100 record as it spent 28 weeks in the top five category of the list.

1.) “WAP” – Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion

After a period of silence from the grammy award winning female rap artist Cardi B, she finally birthed a bold bass heavy track in the beginning of August featuring the hot girl herself Megan Thee Stallion. This song was definitely another highly anticipated collaboration from the two female rap artists who are currently dominating hip hop. It currently holds the number 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The rising cultural impact of this controversial song resulting in TikTok dance videos, parodies and reaction videos, is the reason why I listed it as the song of the summer.
