The Best Art History TikToks

These days, it seems as though everyone is on the fashionable app TikTok. From dancing, comedy sketches, sports, makeup tutorials, and even fashion advice, the app promotes space for people from all ages and communities to create videos and connect with people who share similar interests.

Art history is no exception. Users can search “art history” and thousands of videos will appear. I’ve rummaged through these videos and have finally compiled a list of the best TikToks in the category.

This TikTok pokes fun at Picasso’s many female lovers and muses. The late artist painted under the Cubist movement, which emphasized a distortion of features: appropriated from African masks that were popular in France in the early 20th century. Because of this distortion, Picasso’s beautiful muses were painted stylistically.

I love this video because it incorporates comedy with a fact that many don’t know about world-famous Renaissance artist Michelangelo: he was homosexual. His homosexuality led him to an obsession with the ideal male figure. He carefully measured out every part of David drawing from ancient Greek proportions, and allegedly had flings with his male muses.

This makeup video is an amazing replication of Andy Warhol’s silkscreen pop art paintings, specifically of his legendary Marilyn Diptych. The black contour of the face and fingers along with the vivid blue eyeshadow is highly impressive!

A video that is so educational!! Memorizing these words help anyone go from a philistine to (somewhat of) an art historian!

This one genuinely gave me so much joy, as it pokes at the common sentiment that Gothic architecture is better than its predecessor, Romanesque architecture.

With over 2 million well-deserved likes, this jaw-dropping makeup look of Mona Lisa appears perfect. The dark, shadowy shading of the face along with the greyish-olive skin tone emulates Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece in the best way.
