Florence: Dinner on the Arno

Florence: Dinner on the Arno

Florence, Italy, is a city known for its thousands of hidden gems. The sprawling cobblestone streets weave tales of their history as the modern day bustle of tourists and workers make their way about. In the age of the coronavirus, Florence has done what it can to survive in the face of Italy’s major battle with the pandemic. At the beginning of 2020 the streets were barren, but since then the city has done what she can to open up once again. Like many places in the US, Florence has begun offering take-out and other alternate dining options in lieu of its once great plethora of dining locations. Now offering take-out, one little gem is hidden next to an even greater one, and it’s worth checking out for families and couples alike.

Having been a temporary resident of Florence, I began finding the best spots to take guests and friends to eat. The Ponte Vecchio is a famous relic of Florence’s rich history and is close to the city’s center. Heading there from the Duomo and crossing the bridge will take a hungry traveler to a nearby restaurant called Signorvino. The restaurant is filled with wine from all regions of Italy, thus offering a wide array of tastes to enjoy while spending time there. The actual section to sit down in is a balcony overhanging the Arno and facing the Ponte Vecchio. A greater view could not be asked for if sharing the experience with a loved one, as it creates for some breathtaking pictures and immerses one into a famous Florentine backdrop.

The menu keeps it easy, but offers enough variety to pair well with whatever wine(s) are purchased. The dishes are generally smaller, offering cheeses, meats, and breads to pair. There’s a fun option to test mystery wines and guess as to which ones they might be. No matter what one chooses for a dining option, the atmosphere on the river is unbeatable. Such a pillar of history in the background of dinner is enough when paired with the water’s breeze to make for a magical experience. I personally shared it with friends and family alike, and I can’t recommend it enough. It is a small gem in Florence’s otherwise sprawling labyrinth of greatness, but sometimes the little pitstops in between are the most memorable.
