Europe’s Best Spot for Halloween
Transylvania is best known as the Romanian region that’s home to Bram Stroker’s Draucla. One such place to reside there is the famous Castle Bran, connected to the Dracula story but of no direct historical relation to Vlad III, the real man that the monster is based upon. Historically, Vlad III (or by his more terrifying name: Vlad the Impaler) was the direct inspiration for Dracula due to his gruesome and gory tactics he executed while ruling over the lands that would eventually form Romania. With Halloween in mind and the classic monster of Dracula, it seems like Romania would be the perfect destination for some spooky, or more aptly horrifying, activities.
Turning sight to the medieval city of Sighisoara in Transylvania, the Dracula themed festivities take to life. The medieval Citadel Sighișoara, the infamous place of Vlad’s place, has an annual, two-day Dracula themed party in celebration of Halloween. During a stay in Sighisoara there are nighttime feasts that take place, celebratory performances by Transylvania Knights and The Black Witch of the Woods, and much more. There is also a monster-themed party that takes place a few days prior to Halloween in the aforementioned Castle Bran.
Many who have gone to Romania during the All Saints’ season have said they enjoy the parties, but the culture of the Transylvania region is so rich that lovers of history will be in for a treat. Places such as Barsana Monastery and the Fortified Church of Harman are historical spots to visit and learn more about the country while enjoying the Halloween season. Much of Europe celebrates the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day, which take place on the days succeeding Halloween. Being in Romania during this time will also give an authentic experience of the feasts and festivities surrounding these religious events too. If you’re a fan of Bram Stroker’s Dracula or just a lover of Halloween, Romania might be the perfect choice to celebrate the holiday abroad.
