Louis Vuitton Pre Fall 2023 Collection
Beneath the glittering metropolis of Seoul and on a pathway above which the Jamsugyo Bridge looms, Louis Vuitton staged its Pre Fall 2023 show. Creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has a storied relationship with South Korea. In the show notes, he cites actress Bae Donna as a friend. Director Bong Joon Ho’s films are, he says, some of his favorites. Opening the show is HoYeon Jung, the South Korean actress, who rose to Squid Game fame and a Louis Vuitton ambassador. This relationship, no matter how organic, also comes at the heels of a partnership between parent company LVMH and the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
Louis Vuitton: The Collection
The show first opens amidst electronic Korean music as Ghesquière attempted to fuse femininity with modernity and vintage with contemporary. Motorcycle jackets tucked in leather A-line skirts with chunky boots opens the show. Silhouettes range from structured coats and rumpled jumpsuits to pleated skirts and prairie dresses.
Colors are mainly used in primary tones and a litany of patterns are used either together or to spice up a neutral color. Belted minidresses that create flared skirts and oversized puffers worn on straight line dresses emphasize the attempts at variations in silhouette. Also kept at minimum are the Louis Vuitton monograms. Neutral logos appear on plunging bodysuits and checked pants or dresses improve an otherwise standard outfit.
Then, references to the 1960s and 1970s appear with shift dresses, geometric patterns and power suits, bohemian wear respectively. Blazers are worn over tight bodysuits and pleated maxi skirts. The balancing act is more apparent overall. Ghesquière attempts to straddle French timelessness and the bold streetwear South Korea is infamous for.
Finally, a series of shirt dresses worn over loose trousers in pale gray and blue close the show. Thin belts cinch the waist provide much needed structure to a look that could overflow and be nonsensical.
