Priya Ahluwalia: A Name to Know
By: Valerie Torres
Designer and author Priya Ahluwalia, founder of her eponymous fashion label, merges her Indian-Nigerian heritage and her London-based upbringing to inspire her menswear collections where she reinvents the construction of vintage and deadstock textiles.
Ahluwalia launched her label in 2018, and by 2020, it became one of eight brands to win the LVMH Prize. The label was also featured on the Forbes 30 under 30 on the European Arts and Culture List. Later that year, the brand participated in Guccifest, and in December 2020 the brand was named a People Honoree at the Fashion Awards.

Aside from making large strides in the fashion industry, Ahluwalia has also published two books, Jalebi and Sweet Lassi. Jalebi showcases her childhood, growing up in London and visiting Southall, the first punjabi community in Britain. Sweet Lassi is inspired by the author’s family trip to Nigeria in 2017, in which she spotted a local wearing a London Marathon 2012 shirt. This prompted her to take a trip to Panipat, India, the global garment recycling capital of the world. After photographing the city and its cultural heritage, Ahluwalia vowed to establish a sustainable foundation for her brand.

Most recently, Ahluwalia’s Autumn/Winter collection 2021 collection was presented in the form of a short film titled Traces. In collaboration with musician Cktrl, the models move to synchronized choreography in a romantic candle light setting, dressed in bold hues of complementary blues and reds, with moments of purple and green. Stripes are a staple feature of this collection, which adds to the fusion of modernity and nostalgia that the designer describes in the film bio.
