NYFW Son Jung Wan Fall/Winter Collection
Son Jung Wan was officially established in 1989, and has since become one of the leading brands in South Korean fashion.
A self starter, notably launching her career from a single humble shop outside of Galleria until her prowess drove them to giving her a place inside. Since then, Son Jung Wan has been further recognized for her work and received Seoul Metropolitan’s Designer of the Year in 2005.
The brand got to debut its fall/winter collection at NYFW 2023 On February 11th. The event was held at Spring Studios in New York. Those in attendance admired the clothes that championed minimalism, 90s inspiration, and celestial glamor.
In fact, actress Alessia Vernaza from Downton Abbey, and the co-star of Brad Pitt in the movie Babylon, was in attendance, Vernaza said “I loved the organization, color choices, and models…it was perfect!”
Glittering Gold and Sweet Orange
Among the many looks the collection featured orange and gold glitter designs for both men and women. Uniquely, the styles ranged from draping coat tails to very sharp cut collars. Thus, producing a very yin and yang synergy to the event.
The rigid features, along with the amorphous looser pieces both speak to the same effect. Essentially a sense of adventure, with each outfit revealing a story unto itself.
Seen above, the level of details bringing these looks together is extraordinary and elevates the collection. Likewise, some choice details are the flowing and wide mouthed sleeves of the top contrasting with the flowing and open skirt beneath.
It speaks almost to a stylistic clash between western and more traditionally eastern forms of royal regalia. Furthermore, take note of the fierce and angled pockets on the fiery orange overcoat, or the combined zip on the delightfully glamorous and fuzzy pseudo-skirt and jacket number just above.
Holographic Space And Glamour
This next segment of pieces contains a new signature texture and tonal quality, almost a reflective miasma. Particularly, the sheen over a pool of oil. These pieces give each look a mesmerizing quality and a space age look.
We see these pieces coupled with everything from metallic and shapely statement sweaters, to a full sheer dress hanging straight to the floor with the appearance of chainmail.
Conversely, the new signature material played more straightforwardly in a men’s look. On the other hand we also see that enchanting dress paired with a soft blue cropped jacket.
Geometric High Fashion
Some of the most exciting works on the runway were these looks incorporating stark geometric patterns and designs.
Significantly, the contrasting of black and white, as well as pieces designed with careful tolerances to produce a very specific and futuristic silhouette and aesthetic.
On the look directly above, a unique combination of a draping skirt like effect paired with shorts beneath a striking and exaggerated jacket.
The dresses were to die for, and subverted expectations in their design at every turn. The harsh geometry of their patterns giving them a distinct quality.
Markedly, one also notices the rigid cut of a neckline here. The peplum being driven down farther below the hips (above), and a dress coming together around the wearer in a hug like a robe (below).
All in all, this was an exciting and evocative showing by Son Jung Wan. To summarize this collection, we see an artist who has defined their niche and is developing their own little world therein. The entire exhibition had a uniquely wonderful quality.
