A ‘Peach’ of Art: Melke Makes 2023 Debut

A ‘Peach’ of Art: Melke Makes 2023 Debut

Fashion Week has been consistently delivering fan favorite looks from similarly favorite designers for years. 2023 is no exception. Melke’s 2023 collection in particular has whimsical and impressive styles that left audiences speechless and visually impressed for their debut runway show.

For those unfamiliar with Melke– have no fear of being out of style. The fashion brand is still relatively new, founded by a young Emma Gage. Gage is based in New York, and has worked with popular designers like Betsey Johnson. With a total of four previous collections, Melke has a fashion style that hits home for Gen Z’s fashion enthusiasts. From head to toe, their newest collection– and runway debut– is avant-garde while still connecting with old-school roots.

Melke’s Inspiration

Inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book ‘James and the Giant Peach’, as well as Tim Burton’s adaptation of the same name, Melke’s collection is a cluster of cool colors with bright highlights and patterns to bring the looks into focus. The looks featured on the runway all share the same baggy, informal impression, resembling a classic American patchwork quilt, and most outfits provide their models with an almost shapeless appearance, as seen in the photo below.

And that shapeless, baggy look is exactly what Melke is going for. The brand is gender-neutral, Melke’s clothes tied down to no ‘perfect look’ or gendered option. This means it is in tune with styles of the current time. You can see looks like the ones on Melke’s runway if you tune into the Gen Z side of Tiktok (as this author typically does.) It is because of this that Melke can find its home in the more expressive styles of the newer generation. With the brand’s missions to aid sustainability and combat human trafficking, it is off to a good start in the industry. Their 2023 fashion week was the brand’s debut, and a good chance to market to their target audience.

Melke says: To Peach Their Own

Some of the looks in Melke’s collection were a mismatch of more trending styles and older styles, with the occasional addition of ribbons and bows. An array of mesh shirts, halter tops, and monochromatic matching pieces were seen when the models displayed Melke’s works. A few of the pieces even came attached with peach-y details, with peach slices being attached to sweaters and skirts.

Royal purples and deep, forestry greens are all in the collection, providing a wintery-looking element to the overall ensembles. It’s a mismatched assembly of clothing that’s steampunk-ish in terms of aesthetic. And, it hints at the antiquated Mod style that rocked London in the sixties. Some outfits resembled nightclothes, like nightgowns or pajama pants. Chunky Dr. Martens accessorized the costumes.

With a good debut and nice outfits, Melke’s a proper fit with fashion brands who’ve got the world as their oyster. It will absolutely be a pleasure to watch them grow in popularity as the young adults of Gen Z, larger brands, and sustainability enthusiasts realize the potential of Melke’s looks and flock to the brands website to see if they too can get a ‘peach’ of the action.
