For his Spring / Summer 2020 collection, Mark Gong reflected upon his four years spent at the Midland school, in Los Olivos, California. Void of technology and the luxuries of city life, the school immerses each student within a secluded, natural setting and educates alongside living a rustic lifestyle.
Reminded of his time on the nearly 3000 acre campus, Gong imagines a fantasy world that blends the sensory experience of camping and hiking with the floral, foliage and wooden textures. Exploring his natural surroundings quickly enveloped Gong’s creativity and manifested into couture-life treatments — hand-sewn feathers, beading to mimic dew-drops and intricately woven climbing ropes.
Though the designer remains a New Yorker in the physical world, his mind can never leave his alma mater — Mother Earth.
