Coco Gauff: My parents were both athletes and I played a lot of different sports growing up. After watching the William Sisters, I was inspired to stick with tennis.
Zoey: You’ve achieved remarkable success at such a young age. What do you attribute your achievements to?
Coco Gauff: I work hard and trust the process. I am lucky to have a family that supports me and allows me to focus on tennis and loves me no matter whether I win or lose.
Zoey: How do you handle the pressure and expectations that come with being a young tennis sensation?
Coco Gauff: Dealing with pressure is not always easy. But I’ve come to realize the importance of prioritizing my happiness and self-worth. Enjoying every aspect of the game and staying true to myself helps me stay grounded and focused on what truly counts.
Zoey: Can you share any pre-match rituals or routines that help you get into the right mindset?
Coco Gauff: Before each match, I focus on my mental preparation. I spend some quiet moments visualizing my game, imagining successful shots and strategies. This helps me build confidence and get into the right competitive mindset.
Zoey: Can you share the creative process behind designing your new sneaker with New Balance? What were some of the key elements you wanted to incorporate?
Coco Gauff: The journey of creating my new sneaker with New Balance was a true team effort. We all brainstormed to infuse elements that resonated with my style and my needs on [the] court. My family, especially my mom and aunt, played a big role by suggesting color tones that complement my skin. This new Coco CG1 City Brights color-way reflects the electric energy I feel on the court with what I feel NY style is: bold and exciting. I love that this shoe has all of the technical aspects needed on court but can easily be worn off court!

Coco Gauff: The Coco CG1 City Brights reflects my identity through its vibrant colors and meaningful design. The shock of green symbolizes my energy and electric play on the court, while the warm shades of red and brown represent my connection to family and culture. The involvement of my family in the design process adds a personal touch, making these sneakers an extension of who I am both on and off the tennis court.

Coco Gauff: When designing my sneakers, comfort and performance were huge priorities. As a professional tennis player, I needed a shoe that could support quick movements, provide stability on the court, and allow me to move with ease all over the court. The cushioning, traction, and overall fit were crucial elements to ensure I could give my best performance while feeling comfortable and confident on the court.
