A Brand to Know in 2021: Theophilio

Every fashion week, we are graced with youthful brands showcasing their work and establishing their place within the industry. This year, Edvin Thompson, designer of contemporary brand Theophilio, did exactly that as he presented his spring/summer 2021 collection titled “Migration” in September during NYFW. 

 

Inspired by his childhood in Jamaica and the New York culture that he is currently surrounded by, the showcase is a digital presentation of posing models edited onto a moving background of a bright, clear sky in Jamaica, accompanied by scattered appearances of blooming bushes, trees, civilians, and moving traffic.

Vibrant shades of red, green, yellow, and pink are present in many looks during the video, contrasted by balancing moments of black, brown, and navy statements. His use of color may reiterate the contrast in displaying his own vibrant youth in Jamaica alongside the maturity of now being based in New York City.

Thompson’s use of all-around extravagant and flamboyant looks are best represented in pieces like a neon-yellow silk top with excessively long sleeves, an all white fringed, sheer cardigan, and a fire-like shade of red fur jacket. Even in his more modest looks, we still see statement silk and velvet fabrics.

The colorful and energetic looks in “Migration” represent the many cultures and identities that Thompson resonates with. We also see this in the range of hairstyles included in the looks such as blunt cuts, pin curl updos, locs, and beaded braids. The constant reiteration of Thompon’s two cultures is shown throughout the entire display.

Edvin Thompson is a designer who values community over all. He represents a merging of two cultures, which many immigrants can relate to. His brand Theophilio is a unisex brand, creating inclusivity for the audience of this brand.
