Stella McCartney, Sofia Vergara and Idris Elba Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

1 in 8 women in the US will develop breast cancer in a lifetime. This year is expected to see 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in US women, 63,960 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer, and 40,920 US women are expected to die from breast cancer this year.*

English Fashion Designer Stella McCartney launched a new philanthropic platform named Stella McCartney Cares that will focus on the millions of people that have been affected by breast cancer. Since 2014, Stella McCartney has contributed to Breast Cancer Awareness through informative global campaigns, donating proceeds to support centers and charities worldwide.

The campaign is accompanied by a cinematic short film “All Is Love”, including an inspiring and touching poem by Kai Isiah Jamal; narrated by Actor/DJ/ Producer Idris Elba. Elba closes the video with “Praise to the power that cancer could not take”.

To Elba [who lost his father to cancer 5 years ago], being the face of the campaign encourages men to talk about this illness with the women in their lives. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is 1 in 1,000 and 2,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2018. Now is the time for everyone to understand and do whatever it takes to be healthy and be prepared.

Removing the taboo around men talking about breast cancer and encouraging other men to talk about it with their wives, mothers, sisters… isn’t something we often see or hear about, but it should be. We should be encouraging the women in our lives to go for regular check-ups.” – Idris Elba

This month, McCartney is donating 1,000 new versions of the Louise Listening post-operative mastectomy compression bras to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. McCartney lost her mother, Linda Louise McCartney to the deadly illness in 1998, and she named her post-operative mastectomy compression bras in her honor. McCartney also collaborated to launch limited edition “All is Love” bandanas with Best Made Co to encourage everyone to get checked.

We see our stars; a cast of proud and strong women reveal their mastectomy scars in beautiful, natural scenes. It’s about channeling the power and the beauty… in overcoming breast cancer.

Stella McCartney also releases a limited edition lingerie set in conjunction with the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.  This year, Sofia Vergara donned the Rose Romancing set [a rose, lace embellished triangle bra (from $145) and bikini brief ($110)], available to order from Stella McCartney stores from Oct. 1. Proceeds will benefit breast cancer charities and treatment centers, including the Linda McCartney Centre in Liverpool, the Hello Beautiful Foundation in London, and Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. Previous advertising imagery included influential women in music, fashion and film: Alicia Keys, Chelsea Handler, Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss.
