Madlib Releases Album Champagne For Breakfast

Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, and DJ Muggs keep the idea of a golden aged cult classic New York alive in the new album Champagne For Breakfast. The album has 15 songs, and its run-time is around 39 minutes.

Throughout the album one hears a switching back and fourth from old movie clips, and a purely Queen’s rap syncopation. Interestingly, many of the songs describe a vibrant world of food. Which in recent years has become a staple characteristic of Queens, New York.

It’s so great to hear a place celebrated and championed the way that is has been on Champagne For Breakfast. Many native to New York, and especially those from an outer boroughs will find the appreciation and love that’s there.

Madlib & Mayhem’s Champagne For Breakfast

The release of this album may come as a surprise to many. As Madlib is a producer with whom many hope to work with, but never get the chance. With the release of Champagne for Breakfast, Meyhem enters a lucky group counting J Dilla, Freddie Gibbs, and MF Doom among it’s number.

Similarly, to the other collaborative projects listed previously, Madlib takes what makes Meyhem Lauren so appealing and elevates his talent through his (Madlib’s) nuanced production and quality samples. You can feel the time taken to dig through crates in order to cultivate a signature Queens based sound.

The length of the album is something that is unique. The album tells its story in the way that is like highlights. The run times are enough to give you a feeling of a mood, however they may not be long enough to tell a full story.

Over half of the songs are only 1 to 2 minutes long. Four of the songs rest in the 3 minute range Big Money, Evolution, Wild Salmon, and Fresh out the Water. One song remains an outlier at 5 minutes, and that is Szechuan Capital. This could be its blessing or its curse depending on the listeners taste.

All in all, Champagne For Breakfast is celebration, that will no doubt be a fantastic addition to Meyhem’s catalogue. The album as a whole is balanced and stays consistent all the way through. The songs would make great additions to any playlists, and come right in time for the weekend! Some of the highlights include Wild Salmon, Szechuan, Fresh Out The Water, and Big Money.
