Ringo Starr Celebrates His 83rd Birthday

As Ringo Starr celebrates his 83rd birthday, a look back is taken on the artist that is cemented in music history. Richard Starkey, known by his stage name Ringo Starr, was born on July 7th, 1940, in Liverpool, England. The English musician, singer, songwriter, and actor is most notably known for his role as drummer in The Beatles. As a member of the four-piece band, Ringo played a major role in shaping the sound and success over the decade they were together.

From a very young age, Ringo knew what he wanted to pursue. He recalls even at just 13 years old, he only wanted to be a drummer. He began playing in various local bands in 1959. However, in 1962, he was asked to replace the original Beatles drummer, Pete Best, joining George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon.

Ringo brought a unique rhythmic style and infectious personality to the up-and-coming band. While known for its simplicity, Ringo’s drumming style is also characterized by its uniqueness. He is left-handed yet plays on a right-handed kit. As he drums, he throws his shoulder into the groove. Ringo provided the steady drum grooves, fills, and vocals to some of the biggest classics by The Beatles, including “Octopus’s Garden,” “With a Little Help From My Friends,” and “Yellow Submarine.”

Following the disbanding of The Beatles in 1970, Ringo began a successful solo career. This included scoring seven consecutive Top 10 singles, including “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Back Off Boogaloo.” One of his most notable works is his eponymous album released in 1973, which included the hit “Photograph.”

Throughout the 1970s, Ringo also continued his film career as an actor that began with The Beatles films. In the 1980s, he was also the first narrator of the famous children’s television program, Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.

Outside his musical achievements, Ringo has become a major advocate for “peace and love” and other charitable causes. He was knighted for his services to music by Prince William in March 2018.

Ringo Starr is still following his career today as he continues to perform with his All Starr Band. As his 83rd birthday is celebrated by fans across the world, his contributions to the music industry and the success of The Beatles are honored. Happy birthday, Ringo Starr!
