Her Path to Music

From Bay Area, CA, Mia Santos is an up-and-coming artist known as Mami Mia. Growing up in a musical household encouraged her to follow in those footsteps. In a conversation I held with Santos, she said that her mother would always sing, which inspired her to start singing. Her uncle produced music, and they worked on fun projects together. Around the age of 11, her uncle bought her her first guitar. Like any other artist, she went through stages of pursuing her music career. Mia stopped playing the guitar around high school because she wanted to know how she would have a career in music.

When she played the guitar, she also used to write her songs. She took a break so that she’ll have much more to write about what she is going through. Halfway through college, she became very ill, which made her realize that she had to start living. In 2018, she began writing music seriously and released her single “Sweet History“. With the help of her friends, she became inspired and encouraged to go for it and pursue a music career. While attending school she would have an hour commute, which allowed her to become creative in her writing.

COVID allowed her to focus more on her career because she had enough time to build up her music network. She realized that social media played a significant role and she became confident in growing her network which was a big step.  She took time to learn about the music industry so that she can fully understand the industry.

Santos came across a program online offered by New York University for songwriting and she took it as a sign to go for it. She submitted three demos to apply to the program along with two other songs. Getting accepted to the program was an honor for her because previously she never went to school for music.
