Up and Coming Artist: Jessie Reyez

Jessie Reyez, 26, streaming goddess. Haven’t heard of her yet? Reyez is taking the music scene by storm, popping up all over the internet playing her hit song, Figures. Reyez proves that following your dreams will reap benefits. With her signature look of bold brows and long messy hair, she’s sure to make it big. This past summer, she was featured on Calvin Harris’ new album in the song, Hard to Love, and has some collaborations with the likes of Ariana Grande, and others coming up.

 

Reyez comes from Toronto, Canada where she immigrated from Colombia with her family. Her father played guitar and soon she picked it up. Music has always been Reyez’s escape, but as she got older it became a dream she was chasing. Humble and brimming with so much dedication for the arts. Reyez connects with her audience through her lyrics. Her voice is powerful and stands out amongst a sea of pop music.

 

Her debut single, Figures, which carries the heaviness felt after a break up in her voice. It’s like she is the blue bird in my heart that keeps on singing. Check out the song here:

The video starts out with Reyez smashing a guitar and it dims between light and dark as she sits on a chair soulfully sharing her heart with the world. What makes Reyez shine is her raw vulnerability that she shares with the audience. There is something so pure in her lyrics as she writes her feelings.

 

Reyez collaborated on turning one of her songs, Gatekeeper, into a short film about a music producer that tried to take advantage of her in turn for making her a star.
