GR Gallery Presents “Hidden Lights”

Hidden lights

New York, NY – GR gallery is delighted to announce the opening of Hidden Lights, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Italian visual artist Geppy Pisanelli. Opening on February 14, 2025, this exhibition delves into the interplay between nature and artifice, offering a profound exploration of the human condition through a unique visual narrative.

Building on his success in the 2023 group exhibition Dreaming Awake at GR gallery, Pisanelli’s latest series reflects his narrative and compositional exploration of the dynamic relationship between natural and artificial elements. The artist juxtaposes serene natural forms—such as waterbeds, trees, and waterfalls—with stark artificial structures, including shelters and lighting. This contrast challenges viewers’ perceptions, creating a thought-provoking dialogue between the organic and the human-made.

The exhibition’s title, Hidden Lights, encapsulates this interplay. Light, typically associated with visibility, is described as hidden, creating an immediate tension. Pisanelli’s layered compositions reinforce this theme, balancing visibility and obscurity to evoke both visual and intellectual alienation

Exploring the Inner Condition

While the paintings reference external landscapes, they simultaneously reflect an intimate, internal world. Themes of light and darkness resonate not just visually but as metaphors for the human experience, portraying spaces that embody both personal and collective narratives. These “threshold images,” as Pisanelli describes them, draw viewers into theatrical landscapes, oscillating between solitude and community, abandonment and hope.

Pisanelli’s work also resonates deeply in today’s world, addressing global challenges like climate change, migration, and societal upheavals. Quoting D.H. Lawrence, Pisanelli reflects on resilience and renewal: “Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically… We start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes.” His paintings embody this spirit of reconstruction and hope amidst chaos.

A Collaboration of Tradition and Innovation

Geppy Pisanelli is known for blending his Italian pictorial heritage with contemporary techniques, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. His works balance tradition and innovation, offering a distinctive language that challenges perceptions while inspiring reflection.
