18-year-old GirlzLuhDev is from California’s Inland Empire and just graduated from high school. His single “Tooka,” released in 2020, already has over 10 million plays on Spotify alone. It is by far his most popular song as of now. He is only one year into his career as a musical artist and was signed to Capitol Records in 2021.
According to his Spotify bio, GirlzLuhDev has never met his father, who was fatally shot while GirlzLuhDev’s mother was still pregnant with him. He found distraction and inspiration in athletics, particularly basketball, before pivoting towards rap. Lil Uzi Vert was his earliest musical love, and his other influences include Drake, Future, and Chris Brown.
New Releases
GirlzLuhDev released both “Dead Bro” and “Gas Me Up” in 2021, and his voice dances over the tracks. I had advance access to his upcoming EP Day 1 Starter and to the music video for one of the songs “Dangerously N Luv.” The EP will be released tomorrow, July 20th.
The music video features GirlzLuhDev and a woman, presumably the one with whom he is dangerously in love. It is very well edited and uses super cool effects that make it special and more interesting than some other music videos. However, I found that the depiction of the woman took a little away from the video’s uniqueness. There are so many music videos, especially for a male artist’s music, that focus on women showing off their bodies. It did not seem like the woman was given much more of a role than just looking good for GirlzLuhDev. The song is still very groovy and exhibits GirlzLuhDev’s self-confidence.
The EP’s songs have high production value and GirlzLuhDev’s original voice seduces as he raps over the tracks. Despite some repetitive flows and subject matter, the songs are fun and catchy and GirlzLuhDev’s confidence can’t be beaten. I particularly liked the vibe of the track “Feel Away.”
