In Dialogue with Color : Opera Gallery Explores the Power of Color

As Miami’s art scene prepares for the arrival of Miami Art Week, Opera Gallery Miami introduces In Dialogue with Color: Mid-20th Century to Now, a dynamic exhibition examining how artists across generations have transformed color into a profound language of emotion, identity, and perception.

Organized chromatically—Green, Blue, Red, Black & White, Pink, and Orange—the exhibition spans nearly eight decades of modern and contemporary art, highlighting how a single hue can carry limitless expressive possibilities. From intimate portraits to monumental abstractions, the works invite viewers to reconsider how artists use color to construct meaning and shape experience.

Highlights Across Eras

Standout works include Marc Chagall’s L’âne vert (1978) with its mystical blues and greens; Keith Haring’s Untitled (1984) radiating with the kinetic neon orange of 1980s New York; Yayoi Kusama’s Fire (1988) driven by the intensity of her signature red; and Feng Xiao-Min’s Composition No. 10.6.24 (2024), a serene exploration of pink tonalities. Even Claude Monet’s Les Bords de l’Epte à Giverny (1887) appears as a fitting precursor, offering a rich palette of greens that influenced generations to follow.

The exhibition also examines contrast and duality. Pierre Soulages’ Peinture 202 x 143 cm (1967) explores black as a conduit for light, while Amoako Boafo’s Embrace (2023) positions two Black figures against a stark white ground, asserting identity, presence, and pride.

Curatorial Vision

“With this exhibition, we wanted to explore the artist’s engagement with color as a way to symbolize meaning, convey identity, and provoke thought,” says Dan Benchetrit, Director of Opera Gallery Miami. “The mediums and subject matter are diverse, but at its core, this exhibition examines the many ways artists use color.”

An Expansive Roster

The exhibition includes works by Karel Appel, BANKSY, Georg Baselitz, Amoako Boafo, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Niki de Saint Phalle, Lucio Fontana, Keith Haring, Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, Yves Klein, Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Kazuo Shiraga, Pierre Soulages, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, and many more.

Miami Art Week Presence

In conjunction with the exhibition, Opera Gallery will present at Art Miami from December 2–7, 2025, at One Herald Plaza, offering additional opportunities for collectors and art lovers to explore its program during one of the most influential art weeks of the year.
