Geoffrey Mac, 43, a designer from Brooklyn, NY, combines construction with fashion. Using high-quality materials, varying structures and a unique mashup of vintage and modern, his collections are definitely a reflection of his background. Being a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, owner of a latex company and even winning season 18 of Project Runway, his talent and complex designs go hand-in-hand with his experience.

For 2021 New York Fashion Week, Mac presented a virtual show for his collection, Midnight Rider, on Runway360. Presented in a recorder-type video, Midnight Rider is a collection of 39 edgy yet sophisticated looks.

Fetishizing feminine yet dominant men, especially in fashion, has become an issue over the past years. Mac’s collection uses elements of constructed materials with high-fashion business wear to portray men as strong yet fashion-forward. The collection adds to the continuous push for sustainable fashion and finding ways to eliminate waste in the clothing-making process

Most of the looks were neutral with pops of metallic blues and cutouts, to bring an edge to modern clothes. With elements of leather, velvet, chaps and business wear, the collection explores the endless possibilities of mens’ evening wear. According to runway360.cfda.com, Mac’s collection “sophisticated reimagining of the 90s club kid scene, of which Mac was a part of.” Techno stylistic elements are seen with the bright metallics and the play on texture within the looks.

The clothes contrasted against the white backdrop shown in the showcase video. Transitions brought in the elements of technology with the vintage element of older videotape styles. The video was able to showcase all angles and aspects of each look, giving the audience a 3-D experience, something we are all longing for these days.

Geoffrey Mac made his NYFW debut in 2012 at the Exit Art venue and has since then worked with Debbie Harry, Neon Hitch and more established designers like himself. His history with construction, the military and rave culture combined themselves to make his 2021 Midnight Rider collection. Every element reflects the personal style of Mac and the growing need for more diverse mens’ styles.
