In 2021, Silas Short packed up his car and left Chicago after a defining loss inspired him to take a leap in search of new possibilities. His debut album, ‘Lushland’ shows that journey & search he went through. – an imagined refuge where he confronts his emotions without fear. |
Silas Short’s debut album LUSHLAND is a journey through highs, lows, and self-acceptance, embodying the unpredictable process of starting over. “When my world changed before the move, I desperately needed that sense of confidence back,” Silas says. “The culture shock of LA alone was enough to inspire a record, but ultimately being here I really felt like I had something to prove.” |
In LA, Silas found the words and sounds that captured the concepts in his head. Collaborators who helped execute his vision include neo-soul legend James Poyser of The Roots and Soulquarians (Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Ms. Lauryn Hill), Luke Titus, and Peanut Butter Wolf. LUSHLAND was co-produced by Ryan James Carr (Usher, Cordae) and mixed by six-time Grammy Award-winner Cole M.G.N. |
Silas describes the album as a “bird’s-eye view of many complicated emotions.” He wrestles with deep insecurity and doubt on the lo-fi “PH0NECALL,” navigates the ups and downs of a long-distance relationship on the album’s title track and “PASS ON BY”, and experiences ego death in a letter to himself on “AFFIRMATION”. But for every moment of darkness there’s a burst of light, as on “ILIKEU,” a flirty, lighthearted note to a crush. On LUSHLAND, Silas’ musings do not provide answers but instead create space for exploring conflicted feelings: “This is what LUSHLAND is to me: an attempt at triumph over strife.” This debut album shows that Silas Short is the future of R&B. |
