Leah Remini Sues Scientology For Years of Harassment

The Church of Scientology has had a lot of controversies and horror stories. Now, a lawsuit by a previous famous member is giving these stories a spotlight. Actress Leah Remini is suing The Church of Scientology for years of harassment and torture. Remini left the Church years ago. Their treatment of her, which was the reason for leaving, has seriously hurt her. The lawsuit is also towards the Church’s leader David Miscavige and his treatment. This lawsuit will be a long battle, but all for a necessary outcome.

Leah Remini joined the Church in 1979 when she was nine years old. She and her sister joined soon after their mother decided to join Scientology, this was Remini’s upbringing. In 2013, over thirty years after she originally joined, Remini decided to leave the Church of Scientology. This decision came after she questioned their practices and Miscavige. They expect blind faith. Since then, Remini has made a documentary about ex-Scientologists Leah Remini: Scientology and The Aftermath. She also named her memoir Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology. Her problems with the Church of Scientology have been public, but now there are more details being uncovered.

The Church of Scientology has incessantly targeted Leah Remini since she left. They do not like it when someone leaves. According to Remini, she filed this lawsuit to “require Scientology, and any entity it controls and funds, to cease and desist its alleged practice of harassment, defamation, and other unlawful conduct against anyone who Scientology has labeled as an ‘enemy.’” Remini has claimed that over the years, Scientology has stalked, harassed, and threatened her. In addition, she has missed out on opportunities after leaving Scientology. However, the pain started long before she left.

Leah Remini’s lawsuit goes into detail about her suffering while she was a member of the Church of Scientology. This suffering includes her being put into a Scientology “facility” for four months after the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Cruise is one of the most well-known Scientologists out there. Remini’s stay in the facility was after questioning the whereabouts of Miscavige’s wife, Shelly, as well as being confused by other strange behaviors by Scientologists at the wedding. The facility is where some of the deep torture began. She had to donate millions of dollars to make up for what happened. Thus began her disillusionment and greater pain. Simply looking up the Church of Scientology’s problems got Remini. She felt that she had to get out.

Scientology’s Response

Unsurprisingly, Remini’s lawsuit has upset The Church of Scientology. They have put out a statement diminishing her and her claims. They stated, “This lawsuit is ludicrous and the allegations pure lunacy. Remini has spread hate and falsehoods for a decade and is now offended when people exercise their right to free speech, exposing her for what she is—an anti-free speech bigot.” It seems that this lawsuit will not be easy, and it will be a tough battle to go against these powers. However, Remini’s details of abuse could be too hard to ignore.

Leah Remini’s Fight For Justice

Remini is hoping to get freedom from this lawsuit. She wants to show everyone the truth about Scientology. In a press release statement, Remini declared, “For 17 years, Scientology and David Miscavige have subjected me to what I believe to be psychological torture, defamation, surveillance, harassment, and intimidation, significantly impacting my life and career. I believe I am not the first person targeted by Scientology and its operations, but I intend to be the last.” These lawsuits take a long time. However, Remini will stand tall, since this is a fight for her that has gone decades in the making.
