Why To Pay Attention To Colin Locascio

Why To Pay Attention To Colin Locascio

Ready-to-wear designer Colin Locascio evokes childhood nostalgia and playfulness in his designs with the use of bright colors and knits.

Runway Debut

Locascio’s self-titled brand made a stunning runway debut during NYFW. The Fall/Winter 2023-2024 collection presents a vibrant mix of colors and prints. This is evident through zany faux fur hats, green zebra print, as well as sequined dresses and skirts with sewn-on flowers.

Let’s Go To The Beach!

The beach seems to be a familiar reference point for Locascio, as Spring/Summer 2021 captures the essence of Rhode Island’s beaches, where Locascio resided during the design process. The collection takes on printed mesh, washed denim, as well as fringe in colors tan, green, orange, and pink. Largely inspired by 90s fashion icon Fran Drescher was the Spring/Summer 2023-2024 collection. “I wanted to inject and imagine what the Fran Fine from Flushing would wear to the beach,” Locascio states. Also, Locascio derived the color palette from images of his grandfather’s home in Rockaway Beach in Queens, N.Y.

Childhood Nostalgia

The Frog Crochet Mesh Cardigan has become a Colin Locascio staple. The brown cardigan, adorned with multi-colored stuffed frogs, is a successor to the Fall 2020 Cleo Lurex Vest. Bright green amphibians are printed onto an argyle sweater vest and matching skirt, inspired by a stuffed toy from Locascio’s childhood, Freddy the Frog. Then, there is the Freddy the Frog Sweater, a fuzzy dark blue turtleneck with a jacquard frog for Fall 2022. Finally, the brand introduces a cropped pink and orange Frances Frog cardigan and skirt for Spring/Summer 2023-2024, with a design much like the Crochet Mesh Cardigan.

Behind the Brand

Colin Locascio began his career after studying at Rhode Island School of Design. For some time, he worked in the Marc Jacobs house, where he specialized in leather and fur design for the brand’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Then in 2018, Locascio was appointed Design Director of ready-to-wear for Kendall + Kylie. However, he shifted the focus to his own newly launched label, Colin Locascio, in 2020. His work can be seen on celebrities including Bella Hadid and Cardi B. With the Colin Locascio brand still emerging, a child-like excitement brews for its bright future.
