Victor Li F/W 2021 Collection

About Victor Li

The eponymous brand was launched in 2018 in New York City by the Parsons Fashion Design graduate and aimed to translate his experiences of travel through design. After observing streetwear’s dominance in fashion, Victor Li thought to engage with and give an underrepresented demographic that desired an alternative aesthetic. Growing up, art and travel informed much of Li’s perspective, from studying and practicing the art of different cultures to understanding and adapting to different ways of life.

Li’s Fall/Winter 2019 collection was named a “best collection” by Forbes magazine. Victor was a menswear finalist in the December 2020, Fashion Group International Rising Star Awards. Alongside his most recent Reebok collaboration, he has dressed countless celebrities such as Nick Jonas, Robert Downey Jr, and KJ Apa.

About the Collection

Victor Li debuted his Fall/Winter collection Monday (February 15), in the form of a digital lookbook due to the constraints of the pandemic. The collection, named “A Suspension in Time,” takes inspiration from the attire of western ranchers and puts a modern, trendy twist on the look.

“After a revisit of the achingly beautiful film Brokeback Mountain, the sustained melancholy
evoked a desire in me to experience Wyoming’s picturesque mountains and plains. I took a road
trip through Wyoming’s vast and still life setting, into the idyllic yet lonesome, mountains,” said Li. “Red
dust trails paved the paths in the rearview mirror, burnt orange cliffs emerged and passed by
the car window, and the lonely sky cast an ethereal shadow, draping over the majestic
mountains that filled my peripheral vision. The scenery inspired the perfect photograph that I
could only capture with my eyes and store in my memories.”

Picturesque landscapes are reimagined onto the fabrics: washed denim mimics the erosion of granite and sand, is layered with colors that reflect the plunge of clear water. Motifs from vintage postcards collected along the way are interspersed into the collection theme. Silhouettes are loose and free but with vital tailoring elements. Denim has a strong presence in the collection, a durable yet versatile fabric that delivers its functionality and style through decades. The denim appears in various forms, including raw, tie-dye, printed, and is accompanied by liberal use of plaid and patterns. The collection highlights an interpretation of life once had on a western ranch, now found in a suspension of time.

Notably, Victor Li debuts his first women’s collection for Fall/Winter 2021. Cropped blazers for women are cut close to the body and wrapped around the waist, finished with asymmetrical closure. Jeans borrow from the men’s styles for a rugged and casual look. The seasonal postcard prints transfer from the men’s collection to a blazer-on-skirt look.

Accessories, while informal, are vibrant. Western-inspired bolo ties are renewed with vegan leather cords and polished metal concho. To round out the looks, the Saddle Bag, as its name suggests, takes inspiration from a horse-riding trail bag; and the Tool Bag, completed with a buckle fastening to be worn across the body or on the waist. Finally, cowboy boots are introduced in a denim-leather combo and the classic polished black leather, finished with spur strap details.
