Sherry Shi Emerges As A Model To Watch
Rising model and born-and-raised Texan Sherry Shi is quickly becoming the model to watch in the upcoming years. The IMG model walked in 35 runways for the Fall / Winter 2022 – 2023 fashion week behind only América González. Her success has paid off and Shi walked in everything from Ann Demeulemeester to Dior these past fashion weeks.
A Childhood Dream Come True
Shi is not part of the clique of models that entered the industry as part of their birthright. She grew up in Houston with no family connections in the industry. Her big break came when an agency in Texas agreed to sign her as a teenager. Eventually, IMG took a chance on her and Shi spent several years modeling in Asia. Her career came to a head in 2021, in the throes of the pandemic. After walking for big names such as Versace and Chanel, she landed her first Vogue Magazine cover. The rest was history. Models.com named her a Top Newcomer and her career propelled to international heights.
Despite her career in an industry characterized by its femininity, Sherry Shi is a big fan of androgyny and anime. Shi says she appreciates the inclination towards androgyny in the industry and it breaks down gender barriers in clothing. Alongside that, she has a deep love of anime especially the show Demon Slayer.
In the push for diversity in the fashion industry, Shi is also among a group of Asian models including Yumi Nu, Chloe Oh and others who are making their mark. In a conversation with Vogue Hong Kong Shi said, “The key moment I felt I was part of something that embodied [diversity] was the time I had the honor of being on the American Vogue cover…”
As Shi’s career progresses further, she has the opportunity of making her 12-year-old self’s dreams come true and build a bridge for models of Asian descent entering the industry.
