PHILIPP PLEIN Brings Rock-and-Roll Excess to Milan for SS27
PHILIPP PLEIN returned to Milan Fashion Week with the kind of spectacle that has become inseparable from the house. On September 26, the luxury label unveiled its Spring/Summer 2027 collection at Ippodromo Snai San Siro, transforming the venue into an elaborate, monster truck-filled setting for a collection rooted in cosmopolitan glamour, grunge and rock-and-roll attitude.
For SS27, Philipp Plein looked toward the modern nomad—a well-traveled, culturally connected figure whose wardrobe moves effortlessly between cities, occasions and hours of the day. There were echoes of the contemporary music artist throughout, combining the confidence of stage dressing with pieces intended for a more polished everyday wardrobe.
The collection’s predominantly dark, neutral palette established a sleek foundation, interrupted by flashes of electric blue that cut through the monochrome. Leather and denim played significant roles, joined by floral motifs, glittering surfaces, and dramatic accessories that amplified the collection’s rebellious energy.
At its core was a tension between refinement and grit.
Plein translated elements of grunge into sophisticated silhouettes rather than treating the aesthetic as purely casual. Daywear appeared muted and streamlined, while sharp tailoring gave the collection structure and a sense of urban polish. Leather pieces brought a tougher edge, yet remained designed to integrate easily into an everyday wardrobe.
That versatility carried through the collection’s approach to dressing from day to night—and, in true PHILIPP PLEIN fashion, potentially into the following morning.
Short suits injected a jolt of summer energy and offered an answer to afternoon aperitivo dressing. Sleek separates transitioned into evening tailoring, while glittering gowns embraced a more overt sense of glamour. The progression created a wardrobe for a customer who might move from daytime appointments to dinner, nightlife and travel without abandoning the collection’s central attitude.
Suiting was particularly important. Precise lines and classic colors provided a counterpoint to the collection’s more rebellious influences, demonstrating how Plein’s maximalist instincts can coexist with a sharper, more controlled approach to dressing.
Accessories pushed the cosmopolitan theme further. Oversized bags, clutches and backpacks accompanied the looks, reinforcing the idea of a wardrobe designed around movement and a life lived across destinations.
Eveningwear, meanwhile, returned the collection firmly to the unapologetic glamour associated with PHILIPP PLEIN. Shimmering gowns and sleek evening tailoring brought drama to the runway without disconnecting from the darker attitude established throughout the show.
The result was an ode to the urbane rock icon: sophisticated but rebellious, well-traveled but grounded, and equally comfortable with refinement and excess.
That duality has long existed within the PHILIPP PLEIN universe. Founded by German designer Philipp Plein 25 years ago, the independent luxury house has built its identity around an unconventional approach to fashion, pop culture and spectacle. Today, the Switzerland-based PHILIPP PLEIN Group also encompasses Billionaire and Plein Sport, with a global retail presence spanning more than 110 mono-brand stores.
For Spring/Summer 2027, however, the runway spectacle didn’t overshadow the clothes. Beneath the monster trucks and theatrical Milan setting was a collection focused on translating PHILIPP PLEIN’s signature extravagance into a wardrobe built for movement.
It was luxury with a rebellious streak: leather, tailoring, denim, and high-impact eveningwear designed for those who prefer their polish with considerably more attitude.
