Met Gala 2024: What to Expect

Met Gala 2024: What to Expect

Everyone knows this time of the year! The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be hosting its annual Met Gala on May 6, 2024! The theme of this year’s gala is, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion! Because of this theme can be interpreted in many ways, audiences are excited tos ee what celebrities and influencers will wear at the staircase!

Met Gala 2024: Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion Theme

With the use of cutting-edge instruments, artificial intelligence, and computer-generated imagery in addition to more conventional formats like x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes, The Costume Institute’s Spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, will reawaken the sensory capacities of masterworks in the Museum’s collection. About two hundred pieces of clothing and accessories from four centuries will be on display! This will act as a catalyst to explore the recurring themes of rebirth and regeneration as well as a metaphor for the transience and fragility of fashion. Through imaginative and engaging activations intended to replicate the sounds, textures, fragrances, and motions of clothing that are no longer able to be directly interacted with, the exhibition will give these legendary artifacts new life.

TikTok, Conde Nast, and Loewe are supporting this exhibition! A few of the pieces will feature ballgowns from Christian Dior from 1949, a Charles Frederick Worth ballgown from 1887, and a few iconic pieces from Alexander McQueen. The central display will cover 400 years of history, from an Elizabethan bodice from the 17th century in England to purchases made by designers such as Stella McCartney, Phillip Lim, and Connor Ives in the 21st century. These will serve as the foundation for a curation that uses clothing and textile design to unravel and illuminate our understanding of the natural world. Cool, right!?

What Would Everyone Wear?

Since Anna Wintour creates the dress codes for the Gala, she decided to make the code: “The Garden in Time”. What does this mean? Wintour is expecting guests to embody the 1962 JG Ballad short story with the same title with floral attire but with their own twist on it. Expect crystalized flowers or camp versions of garden/tea party attire from the guests.

Another expectation that some individuals may wear is Jonathan Anderson-inspired looks from Loewe! Because some of Anderson’s pieces will be present in the exhibition, it is expected for designers to use some of his elements on their garments for the evening. Also because TikTok is supporting this exhibition, some TikTok stars may grace the staircase with their modern version of the Met Gala theme. For example, because the Y2k aesthetic presence is still strong, one may dress in an Alexander McQueen early 2000s gown or perhaps Christian Siriano may “awaken” one of his past iconic pieces for a guest to grace the red carpet!

Overall, the anticipation for this Met Gala is very high! The exhibition itself will be on display from May 6-September 2, 2024! For more information about the exhibition and its catalog, check it out on the MET website here!
