Maison Margiela Celebrates Capsule With Kozo At Miami Art Week

On Dec. 4, at the Maison Margiela Miami Design District store, the Brooklyn-based tattoo artist – known for his micro-realistic colored tattoos that juxtapose classical art, such as Old Masters, with modern pop culture references – will co-host an event showcasing a selection of Margiela Signature White Icons customized with his black-and-white-tattoo iconography.

The concept of tattooing is evocative of one of the key tenets of Maison Margiela’s design vocabulary — the idea of memory and the passage of time. Building on that legacy, Kozo for this exclusive project has interpreted Maison Margiela’s signature codes and gestures, such as exposing the interior of garments, and giving the impression of natural wear and tear, through the lens of tattoo.

Four distinct narratives, including dripping paint, duct tape, whited out Renaissance paintings, and paper torn away to reveal butterflies, have been applied to 18 one-of-a-kind customized designs singed by the artist, with the tattoo needle included in the packaging. They include Tabi boots, Replica sneakers, a trio of handbag styles — the Glam Slam Classique, the 5AC and the Snatched Classique — and Gentle Monster sunglasses.

The cocktail reception for the collaboration will be held on Dec. 4, from 5-8PM. From Dec. 2-8, the windows of Margiela’s Miami Design District store will also be taken over by Kozo, with trail of tattooed Tabi footprints tracing a path along the floor.
