Interview With Daphne De Baat

Dutch-Canadian model Daphne De Baat recently spoke with The Garnette Report about her career, her book, and nutrition.

Getting Started

At 12 years old, De Baat’s mother entered her in a contest that would jump-start her modeling career. From there, she began auditioning for gigs and landing roles in commercials. Her road to success, however, was not as glamorous as the model life can seem. “It takes a lot longer to become successful than you think,” the model states.

Healthy Eating

Like many models in today’s industry, De Baat opens up about the unhealthy relationship she once had with food. Upon first moving to New York, she often restricted the kinds of food she ate, constructing the idea of “cheating”. De Baat remarks that limiting her diet was not healthy for her, though, she acknowledges that it can be beneficial for some people. Eventually, she reintroduced her cheat foods back into her diet and found that balance is key.

“I enjoyed treats but wanted to make nutritious meals,” De Baat states, adding that satisfying her cravings when she had them made her want to eat ‘unhealthy’ foods less.

Today, De Baat seems to have developed a healthier relationship with food. She frequently posts food-related content on her YouTube and TikTok page. This includes vlogs and recipes ranging from homemade rice bowls to Rice Krispies Treats

Model/Author

De Baat shares some of her own tips for maintaining a balanced lifestyle and more in her book “The Model Manual: Everything you ever wanted to know about everything.” The comprehensive guide, which she wrote during the pandemic, goes over common concerns that beginning models may face. This includes choosing the correct agency, avoiding scams, knowing proper etiquette, and plenty more.

“I wanted to write the book I wish I had,” she shares.

De Baat’s final advice for aspiring models is to “find what makes you unique and different from everyone else.“ She encourages that by simply being yourself, “you can be memorable in a very organic way.”
