Are Future Fashion Shows Going To Resemble Moschino’s Puppet-Sized World

Once you think you’ve seen it all, especially when it comes to fashion shows, something else comes along to change your thinking. I am sure many like myself may question what inspired Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2021 Moschino fashion show featuring puppets. Was this decision solely because of the current pandemic, or did the strings guiding each puppet have a deeper symbolic meaning? No, not really, Scott shared before the lockdown, he knew he’d be showing his collection in alternative ways.

Fashion shows are about the human connection; there is an emotional and tactile element involved in the experience. The Moschino puppet-sized world brings a fantasy experience to the viewers, even if the “viewers” are puppets themselves, at least in the presentation. Each puppet “walked” the runway in miniature couture. But not surprisingly, this mini-show was even more expensive than your standard runway show. All 40 designs needed to be crafted to fit mini frames without losing the actual design. Garments, including chiffon skirts, embroidered dresses, and gowns making any little girl jealous and want it for their Barbie doll.

While Moschino is a well-known brand, it begs the question, can up and coming brands and designers afford to develop unique alternatives to create their shows? It’s been nearly a year since we first heard of the COVID-19 virus. Despite biopharmaceutical companies, scientists, and doctors working hard and fast to develop a vaccine, the virus isn’t going away any time soon. We can hope fashion shows resemble some normalcy next season, but for now, it isn’t looking possible for this season.

Even with in-person fashion shows, there is a fear in the air, at least on my end. After months of not working, I had my first live show with both an in-person and virtual audience. Although I’m thrilled to be back on the runway, it is hard not to worry about the people around me. But what I do know, after months of sweatpants and leggings, it was wonderful to be back in some glorious fashion choices, something I think all fashion lovers are craving.
