Bows Are The Moment This Season

Bows, you know those timeless symbols of elegance and grandeur, are no longer just a simple accessory to compliment a look. This season they become the look itself! The essence of the soft-girl, coquette-core aesthetic, it has been most difficult to look anywhere without seeing one since they gained traction starting late last year.

The topic of girlhood and childhood has significantly influenced current fashion and dress. So, it’s no surprise that such a trademark associated with the time is appearing on red carpets, runways, and retail stores. The popularity of bows can also be due to fashion in a nostalgic stage when reissuing old pieces, as trends from the past tend to come back.

Sandy Liang, a former scantily clad New York based brand, is often said to be responsible for popularizing the bow trend, as they have been synonymous with the brand’s identity for multiple seasons. But this fashion month proved they aren’t the only brand incorporating the dainty motif. Some are understated and subtle, while others are oversized and quite lively.

New York Fashion Week had the most bow sightings by far, specifically in Coach, Carolina Herrera, Tanner Fletcher, LoveShackFancy, Wiederhoeft, and Romina Montserrat. A traditionally girly approach was taken by LoveShackFancy and Coach, with Carolina Herrera going for a more mature, chic look. Wiederhoeft, Tanner Fletcher, and Romina Montserrat took an opposite approach by channeling an edge, androgyny, and theatricality respectively. Milan and London Fashion Week approached the trend head-on, namely in Prada and Simone Rocha. Prada flirted with the concept of nostalgia by adorning knee-length shift dresses with silk bows and pairing waist tie bows with midi skirts. Simone Rocha decided to go big or go home, adding large bows onto looks including a puffer jacket, dresses, blouses, and into hair accessories.

The bow is one of the most versatile pieces you can wear as they can be seen in multiple sizes, shapes, and mediums. Some have even taken the trend a step further by implementing them into vanity looks with eye bows in makeup looks and hairstyles. Partake in this trend for Spring in quintessential pastels, such as light blue and soft pink, or take a vibrant route with pops of color such as a bold red or green.
