BIBHU MOHAPATRA SS23

BIBHU MOHAPATRA SS23

On September 12, 2022, Bibhu Mohapatra released his Spring 2023 collection during New York Fashion Week. The collection was inspired by the life and works of Claude Cahun, the groundbreaking French photographer, writer, and anti-war activist. Cahun rejected existing narratives and conventions,

using their body and lens to explore their ideas about identity and gender fluidity. Besides being an avid admirer of their works of art and writings, Mohapatra has always been intrigued by Cahun’s lifelong pursuit of resisting normalcy.

BIBHU MOHAPATRA showed in this collection, Cahun plays the muse: strong, courageous, and audacious. Each of the 35 looks in the collection are a representation of Cahun’s self-portraits. Jacquards, silk faille, cady crepes, silk chiffons, and Japanese denim are prominent throughout. Embellished looks feature Preciosa crystals from the Czech Republic.

“If there is horror, it is for those who speak indifferently of the next war. If there is hate, it is for hateful qualities, not notions. If there is love, it is because this alone kept me alive.”
-Claude Cahun

This collection was amazing from beginning to end; from the fabric, to the models, to the venue. Everything aligned with this Spring/Summer 2023 collection.

The designer himself Bibhu Mohapatra comes out to an amazing reception for his SS23 Collection.
