2024 Met Gala Attendees Who Went Edgy
The 2024 Met Gala was expectedly a sea of ethereal, dainty greenery and florals, as per the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme and the “Garden of Time” dress code. But there is quite literally nothing more exhilarating or intriguing when attendees keep fashion fun by thinking outside the box by going in a different direction or interpretation. That’s just what some attendees did Monday night, when they took to the iconic stairs donning looks on the edgier side.
Cardi B in Windowsen
The Bronx rapper’s grand entrance was nothing short of quintessential Met Gala theatrics, with a look requiring its own persona entourage. Likely the largest dress of the night, Cardi B wore an all-black mermaid Windowsen gown with a matching headpiece. The dress featured layered ruffling up to the bodice and winged out just off her shoulders. Cardi’s monochromatic look was complemented with some color in the form of emerald jewelry, acrylic nails, and eyeliner in the water line.
Gwendoline Christine in Maison Margiela by John Galliano
Gwendoline Christie held her position in the 2024 Margiela Met Gala class like no other in her custom get-up by John Galliano. The theatrical look was the epitome of avant-garde with a hint of angst, in the crushed red velvet gown and accompanying tulle cape coat. Christie seamlessly channeled whimsicality while also resembling villain character energy.
Emma Chamberlain in custom Jean Paul Gaultier
Now a mainstay at the top of the Met Gala stairs, Emma Chamberlain’s 2024 Met Gala look was the perfect interpretation of the thematic premise of the dress code with a sultry twist. The custom Jean Paul Gaultier gown drew upon a look from a 2003 couture collection, closely resembling poison ivy or the remnants of a flower in its final stages. Chamberlain completed the look with a smoky eye and a matching lip.
Ashley Graham in custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin
Ashley Graham took to the Met Gala steps in a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin which is said to have taken 500 hours to make. The crystal-adorned Black gown was intricately detailed and featured golden flower motifs at the bodice and a leather bust. Ludovic de Saint Sernin blended the house’s trademark style with the dress codes intrinsic ideals of time and reawkening.
Precious Lee in Bad Binch Tongtong
Precious Lee also displayed monochromatic glamour in a gown by Bad Binch Tongtong. The model wore a jet black velvet dress featuring bat-like wings in the back, with a red lip for a pop of color. A darker take on the year’s theme and dress code, Lee’s look is said to resemble that of a fairy and appears similar to a butterfly as well – a nod to the “garden” aspect. The shape and neck are also akin to the sleeping beauty Disney character herself.
