Step into 90s Nostalgia and Rent the Last Blockbuster on Airbnb

Before Netflix, before Hulu and Disney+, there was Blockbuster. Blockbuster was the place to go when you felt like watching a movie–all you had to do was pull up to the store and browse the aisles filled with endless entertainment and snacks.

Over the last decade, with the explosion of streaming services, Blockbuster shut its doors. Only a few Blockbusters remained in Alaska, Australia and Oregon. The first two have since shut down, but the Bend, Oregon location is not only still up and running amid the popularity of streaming services as well as a world pandemic, but it is now offering you a nostalgic place to stay for a few days as a “thank you” for keeping it running.

“Our Blockbuster store is open because of the incredible local community in Bend, and we’ve been grateful to have the support of those beyond our town as the coronavirus pandemic has impacted our business. To celebrate and pay it forward in this tradition of support, Airbnb will make a donation to the Humane Society of Central Oregon, a longtime partner of ours,” the Airbnb description reads.

Yes, the Bend, Oregon location has been posted on Airbnb and the set up for staying in is a perfect one for lounging and watching movies. With the 90s patterned bed sheets and make-shift living room set up, you will walk into 90s nostalgia for Blockbuster and possibly any movie you choose to watch, all for $4 a night.

The store’s manager, Sandi Harding, chose to put it up for rent on Airbnb as a thank you to the local Deschutes County community.

“In appreciation for all that the local community has recently done to support the last-of-its-kind during these uncertain times, this end of summer sleepover will offer movie lovers in Deschutes County the chance for a 90s-themed stay to relive the bygone Friday night tradition just as we remember it,” Harding said in a press release.

Along with the 90s theme sleepover and movies to rent, snacks are available for free when you book a reservation to stay.

“Whether you want to stay up until sunrise or pass out on the couch, we’ve created the perfect space complete with a pull-out couch, bean bags and pillows for you to cozy up with ‘new releases’ from the ‘90s. Crack open a two-liter of Pepsi before locking into a video game, charting your future in a game of MASH, or watching movie after movie. But be wary of reciting ‘Bloody Mary’ in the staff bathroom off of the break room, as you just may summon the ghost rumored to haunt the store,” the Airbnb description reads. “And remember, the store is all yours for the night! So let loose, blast the boombox and wear your favorite ‘90s denim so that you feel right at home in another era.”

Residents can start reserving the space on Aug. 17 for $4 a night.
