Why The Power Couple is Actually a Business Transaction
Whenever two celebrities start dating, ask yourself, “Are they a power couple, or just a business transaction?” Every time this happens, a rumor among fans circulates, almost always saying “This is a PR stunt.” While we may never know if it is or isn’t, we do know that both sides benefit from their romantic partnership, and it usually happens when one or both parties are going to do something. This transaction could be dropping an album, announcing a movie, or starting a new season of a sport. Here are some of the more recent “power couples.”
The most recent example of this is when fans found out that America’s sweetheart Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce were dating. As a good percentage of women consider themselves Taylor Swift fans, or “Swifties,” it’s good to assume that those with male partners watch football. The Chiefs have won Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LIV, making them a closely followed team by football fanatics. By attracting two completely different groups, it’s safe to say that doubling up on both fanbases made a lot of money. Kelce’s jersey sales have gone up 400% since the news broke. We haven’t received the movie statistics for Swift’s The Eras Tour yet, but we can bet that more boyfriends attended to see their favorite player’s girlfriend.
Another celebrity power couple that stunned news outlets was the coupling up of Latin superstar Bad Bunny & model Kendall Jenner. Many Bad Bunny fans did not too thrilled about the pairing. In his song “El Apagon” from his album Un Verano Sin Ti, he talks about how many wealthy Americans are taking up land that belonged to Puerto Rico natives on the island. He also has a popular line that says “Todos quieren ser Latinos,” which translates to “Everyone wants to be a Latino.” This lyric is an indirect jab at those making money off Latino markets. One example of this is Jenner’s tequila, 818. She also upset people with her promos, showing her “working” agave fields. Many Latinos have labeled the video as cultural appropriation. Therefore, the confusion brought on by this power couple is understandable. They conveniently started seeing each other around the time Bad Bunny headlined Coachella. More recently, they went Instagram official a little before he dropped his latest surprise album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Pasara Mañana. Even so, he even indirectly mentions her in some songs. After all, there’s no such thing as bad press.
French-American actor Timothée Chalamet & entrepreneur Kylie Jenner is another one of those questionable power couples. Kylie is notorious for only dating rappers, with her exes including Travis Scott and Tyga. When the press broke the news of Kylie and Chalamet, his fans became upset.
Fans may appear to disapprove of anyone dating the Jenners, as they get angry no matter whom they choose to get romantically involved with. The two were spotted getting cozy at Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour show, making the relationship public. Prior to their public appearance, rumors about the two seeing each other were swirling around, with much doubt about the validity or existence of the pairing. While Kylie has consistently pushed out new products for Kylie Cosmetics. Chalamet has announced a major new movie role in which he stars. He will be the main character in the movie Wonka, playing Willy Wonka. The movie is about the chocolatier’s rise to fame before the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movies. The film will release on December 15th, 2023.
There appears to be an agenda celebrities have, which includes potentially doubling their fanbase whenever something will be streamed or sold. Thus, the popular belief is that these power couples are just PR stunts. But, they work, bringing in lots of money, To fans’ dismay, this marketing tactic being extremely successful ensures that it will happen again.
