Universal Pictures Lands Britney Spears Biopic
Universal Pictures has announced a Britney Spears biopic is in the works, and fans could not be more excited. In a highly competitive auction, Universal won the rights to Spears’ 2023 memoir “The Woman in Me” and soon after made the decision to proceed with the film adaptation, with Marc Platt set to produce. The iconic pop star shared her excitement about the project over social media, stating, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.” Although no decisions regarding casting have been made yet, fans are eager as ever to find out who will portray the singer. People magazine curated a list of celebrities who they deem fit to play her, such as Sabrina Carpenter, Millie Bobby Brown, Sydney Sweeney, Madelyn Cline, and many more.
“The Woman in Me” was released on October 24, 2023, and according to Variety, “sold 1.1 million copies in its first week across print, pre-sales, e-books and audiobooks in the United States.” The intense and personal memoir focuses on Britney Spears musical career and personal relationships, covering everything from her small hometown life in Louisiana to becoming one of, if not the world’s, biggest pop star in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Variety states, “the book was brutally honest and went in-depth regarding her relationships with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake and her family, chronicling the predatory nature of those around her in an attempt to control her life.” The singer was extremely excited and proud in the time leading up to the book’s release, and received nothing but positive and supportive feedback from the fans and media.
Many are eager to see how Universal delivers on this project, given their successful record with other biopics, “including 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton,” which focused on N.W.A. and grossed more than $200 million, and 2002’s “8 Mile,” which grossed $250 million globally.” According to The Ankler, “Sony, Warner Brothers, Fox, Disney and Netflix all vied for the project,” but in the end, Universal struck gold with Spears. The excitement and anticipation over the film is already booming and will continue to grow as more details are revealed in the near future.
