3 Celebrity Owned Beauty Brands Worth Buying

The beauty industry has become one of the most profitable industries today, partly due to the rise of celebrity beauty brands, as it seems like a new celebrity beauty brand is announced regularly. Prominence of celebrity owned beauty brands has seemingly become the new celebrity clothing line, which is something many celebrities used to do but have since shifted to beauty. However, this has prompted some skepticism from the beauty industry and the public, leading some to believe they’re solely for monetary purposes and ingenuine in nature.

But some celebrity beauty brands have successfully passed the threshold of skepticism due to several contributing factors. Beauty consumers value authenticity, integrity, quality, value, and purpose when it comes to the products they purpose, and these values are only heightened if a public figure is behind them. Celebrities must be equipped at committing to these values and leveraging their degree of influence and personal branding to formulate a successful business and to earn the trust of consumers. Few public figures have managed to accomplish such a feat, but the ones who have continue to generate critical acclaim and widespread recognition.

FENTY BEAUTY

Fenty Beauty was launched by global superstar and businesswoman Rihanna in 2017, which prompted a significant turning point in the beauty industry. The purpose surrounding Fenty Beauty was meant to counteract the way in which the beauty industry historically only catered to the needs of one type of person and didn’t broaden its range for women and men of color. Fenty Beauty vowed to stand for broad diversity and inclusivity in its product range to suit the needs of all skin tones in the establishment of the cosmetic conglomerate. *Upon its release, the Pro Filt’R foundation became highly sought after for offering 40 shades (now has 50), which was something that hadn’t been seen in a makeup line prior. On the official website, Rihanna said “Makeup is there for you to play with. It’s there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure, and it should never feel like a uniform.” Rihanna continued her business ventures in the beauty industry in 2020, when she released her skincare line Fenty Skin and launched with just three products.

RARE BEAUTY

Rare Beauty was founded in 2019, but launched in 2020 by actress and singer Selena Gomez, which was inspired by her third studio album Rare, also released in 2020. The mission behind Rare Beauty is to promote the idea of individuality in the beauty space and to support mental wellness regardless of age, gender identity, race, cultural background, and physical or mental ability. Rare Beauty upholds their commitment to mental wellness through their impact initiative the Rare Impact Fund, which allows people to donate and give people access to mental health related resources. On their website, Gomez said “Being rare is about being comfortable with yourself. I’ve stopped trying to be perfect. I just want to be me.” The brand’s launch of their soft pinch tinted lip oils sold out within just 12 hours in 2023 and their best selling product by far is their liquid blush. The company said “Rare Beauty is breaking down unrealistic standards of perfection. This is makeup made to feel good in, without hiding what makes you unique—because Rare Beauty is not about being someone else, but being who you are.”

HAUS LABS

Haus Labs was launched by singer and actress Lady Gaga in 2019, which is rooted in the power of art, science, and kindness. The word “haus” is associated with creativity and the word “labs” refers to the technological side of cosmetics. Haus Labs greatly values producing clean, cruelty free beauty products and makes valiant efforts to be sustainable in their practices and being planet conscious. On their website, Gaga said, “My vision for Haus Labs centers around the future of clean makeup, supercharged products with innovative formulations and novel ingredients.” The brand has received praise for their Triclone Skin Tech Foundation and Concealer infused with skincare, as well as their Phd Hybril Lip Oils.

Celebrity branded makeup lines continue to be an evolving category, but having a big name doesn’t guarantee automatic success, so it’s important for them to play their cards right. Beyonce launched her haircare line “Cecred” February 20th and Bella Hadid has recently teased a fragrance line since her split with Charlotte Tilbury, so it’s safe to say the niche part of the industry.
