Irish Artist Spotlight: Will Troy
Will Troy, a promising young talent, is making musical inroads. The 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Wexford, Ireland, gained popularity due to his smooth voice and ruminative lyrics. A self-taught musician, Will Troy began writing songs when he was 13 years old. The self-described “really handsome” singer resorted to songwriting as an “outlet” to make sense of the tumult around him.
In fact, fame wasn’t handed on a platter for Will Troy. He began his somewhat arduous musical career “gigging” at musical venues while balancing his recording career and school. In his interview with Molly Cantwell from “Hot Press,” Will Troy cites Bon Iver, Dermot Kennedy, and Sam Fender as his musical influences.
Troy debuted in 2022 with “Something About Stars,” a song chiefly about limerence and romanticizing the cosmos. Following this, he dropped singles such as “Lost Your Laugh,” “Mercy,” “Artwork,” “Tell You More,” and “The Other Side of Falling.”
Will Troy Debuts “Borrowed Time”
On February 28, 2025, Will Troy released his new single “Borrowed Time,” a song he co-wrote along with Alex Beitzke, Conway Ellis, and Michael Champion. Produced by Half Rhymes, “Borrowed Time” is a fitting addition to Troy’s underrated and understated musical prowess.
Featuring rich vocals and omnipresent guitar strums, the song concocts a stirring mood emphasizing the impermanence of connections. Through arresting lyrics, the singer particularly reflects on a relationship that progressively wilted. Keen to break free from toxic patterns, the lyrics, in essence, call attention to the “cost of borrowed time”.
Succeeding the vocal-heavy intro, the song is harmonized with effective instrumentation. Pulsing beats from percussion, resonant bass and synthesizers add depth to the song. The poignant composition, mellifluous vocals, and evocative lyrics remind listeners of Coldplay and Chris Martin.
The music video features Troy sincerely articulating verses amid a smoky silhouette. As the song evolves, the singer makes a case against fidgeting with borrowed time as he cremates old memories and knickknacks.
With over 40,200 monthly listeners and rapidly growing fanbase, Will Troy is an up and coming Irish artist to watch out for.
