The Devil Wears Prada Makes A Shocking Return
A sequel to the 2006 hit-comedy/drama The Devil Wears Prada is in the works, and fans are on the edge of their seats awaiting more details. Aline Brosh Mckenna, the screenwriter for the original film, is rumored to return with an enticing extended storyline. According to Variety, the film is supposedly centered around “Priestley as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestley desperately needs.” Word on who from the original cast is returning is unclear, except for one, at the moment, but fans have high hopes that all the leading actors will return for a much-awaited reunion.
In February of this year, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, and Anne Hathaway made an unexpected reunion to present best actor in a comedy series at the SAG Awards. When Streep appeared on stage, claiming she forgot her glasses and the envelope that revealed the winner, “Hathaway and Blunt then appeared to hand Streep her missing items, a nod to their roles as assistants to Miranda Priestly (Steep).” Almost instantaneously, rumors of a sequel circled social media and news outlets everywhere.
The success of the original film was insurmountable for any film in that genre at the time. The highly successful and iconic film has maintained its relevance for nearly 20 years, as new generations are continually being introduced to the fiery, witty, and often viscous editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly. According to People magazine, “the film ultimately grossed $326 million at the worldwide box office and was well-received during the awards season, earning Streep her 14th Academy Award nomination.”
Hopes that Streep steps back into her role as Priestly is high, although her track record with participating in sequels is not astounding. According to the producer of Mamma Mia, Streep was “hesitant about doing another film because she doesn’t typically do sequels.” But according to Entertainment Weekly, “all major stars from the first film — including Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, plus director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman — are in talks to return for a sequel currently in development at Disney.” The anticipation for the sequel, and who is set to return, is palpable, and will be a frequent topic of discussion for months to come. Fans are eager to reintroduce themselves to Priestly’s cut-throat lifestyle and immerse themselves in a nostalgic yet iconic The Devil Wears Prada sequel.
