Alt-Rock Band Mac Luster returns with “Staring at Nothing”
On Wednesday, June 17th, Orange County alt-rock band Mac Luster released their 3rd single of 2026 “Staring at Nothing.” The song explores the lingering weight of heartbreak and ensuing struggle of letting go. The group’s vulnerable approach balances punk, ‘grunge’ instrumentation with delicate melodies.
The single will headline their debut EP, Ritual, coming later this summer. The new release will also feature 4 additional tracks. The SoCal band taps into a range of grimy power punk, meticulous prog rock, and soaring goth pop. The song itself feels like a sweet frenzy; it’s dreamy and whimsical without losing its alt-rock identity. As result, multiple genres blend together to create a unique sound.
Take it from Jake Mazon himself, the band’s singer-songwriter, “Writing it in 2012, it’s the oldest song out of this batch. Lyrically, it’s looking at heartbreak from the eyes of someone who’s young and angry. I was very into the Smiths then and definitely tried to channel a bit of Morrissey in the lyrics. I’ve tried to record and release this song so many times, but it never felt quite right until revisiting it last year.”
Mac Luster: An Improbable Story
First and foremost, it must be said: Getting to this point was far from simple. The phrase “bumps in the road” doesn’t tell half the story. Founded by Jake Mazon in 2013, Mac Luster spent the mid-2010s gigging around Orange County, CA. Their music resembled the angry, jagged rock songs of the 1990’s. The group’s first iteration lasted five years before splitting in 2018. Mazon even took the band’s earliest recordings off all streaming platforms. Mac Luster was well and truly dead. Until it wasn’t.
Fast forward to Spring 2025. Mazon and former bass player Jackson Wargo share a meaningful phone call expressing their desire to release music under the Mac Luster name once again. So, with the help of Jordi Radnoti (Olivia Rodrigo’s drummer), the two reignited Mac Luster’s flame. And now their long awaited EP is almost here. The alt-rock group certainly took the road less traveled, but now they’re ready to shine.
Mazon said of the EP, “These songs were chosen because they were about experiences I’d had when I wasn’t writing, and I felt like I needed to exorcise them out of me. The tracklist is a chronological retelling of these things I needed to let go of, and it became a bit of a ritual to release them.” Check out “Staring at Nothing” today on streaming platforms everywhere and don’t miss “Ritual” this summer!
