R&B Songstress, Joy Postell Sits Down W/ TGR
Named Okayplayer’s Top 20 Breakout Artists in 2020 and featured in top publications such as FADER, Pitchfork, and Bandcamp, Joy Postell is back with her first single, AT EASE, off of her upcoming project titled: The Magician, releasing Summer 2023. AT EASE gives you a fusion of timeless R&B, blended with authentic storytelling and raw instrument mixing. We had the opportunity of sitting down with Joy Postell to talk about what’s next, who she is outside of music, and more!
- Where are you from?
I’m from Baltimore, MD
- What inspired you to get into singing?
I was inspired to pursue my vocal talents by my mother, who is a musician as well.
- When did you know this was not only a passion of yours, but something that would make you very successful?
I knew that music was my calling from a young age. When I released my first song cover on Soundcloud, I gained a lot of unexpected traction, which that further validated the possibility of a successful career in music.
- What was the very first song you wrote & how was that creative process?
The first complete song I wrote was in the 9th grade – a popular Baltimore Club Producer by the name of J Rocc gave me a beat after hearing me sing an Alicia Keys cover. I remember the excitement of sitting in my room and writing down the melodies that came to me. It was an organic process that brought me fulfillment and joy.
- If you could collaborate with one artist that fits your style of music, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Kendrick Lamar – I view him as an artist who not only sonically pushes boundaries but brings out the most creative parts of his collaborators.
- When was your first performance and how did you prepare for it?
My first performance was in pre-school, we had a talent show for the school and I had a solo part. I prepared for the show by practicing daily under the supervision of my teacher.
- What is next for Joy Postell?
I’m super excited for the next year and a half! In about a week, I will be sharing the music video to my latest single, ‘At Ease’, followed by the release of ‘The Magician’, which is the first act of my 4-part mini album series set to release over the next year.
- What advice can you give those who are following in your footsteps?
My advice to anyone pursuing a dream is to believe in yourself and treat people well. When you believe in your purpose and commit the necessary time to your craft, you will attract the right people that will assist in bringing those visions to life.
