MJ NEBREDA ANNOUNCES MIXTAPE + SINGLE
Miami based artist, producer, DJ and culture disruptor MJ Nebreda has just announced her new mixtape, Arepa, will be dropping September 29th on EMPIRE. To preview the project, MJ has also released a new single titled “Subliminal” along with an accompanying music video. This high-powered, swagger-fueled track includes production from New York based producer Sammy and builds on MJ’s neoperreo sound, a unique combination of reggaeton, raptor house, and dembow. “Subliminal” gives a glimpse into the elegance hidden within the chaos of late night escapades captured within her music and serves as a statement piece to indicate she doesn’t intend to stop delivering nightlife driven novellas any time soon. Her vocals glide between the resonance of a thick filtered synth line which sweeps across the track like a tidal wave. Alternating between singing and rapping her verses in Spanish, “Subliminal’s” music video shows MJ luring an entourage of elegantly styled bodyguards through an industrial compound, similarly to a siren drawing in sailors at sea. Scenes of them adoring MJ are interchanged between black-and-white solo dance shots capturing post-rave euphoria while the song’s title discreetly flashes across the screen like a subliminal advertisement. The desolate setting is instantly turned into a runway the moment MJ arrives as her superstar-like confidence is enough to mesmerize any room.
The new single follows her most recent release, “Rapido,” which features Ana Macho, and was also accompanied with a Y2K lo fi-aesthetic visual where both MJ and Ana recite their verses while dancing by a beach side. Her upcoming Arepa mixtape explores the evolution of Latinx club music as MJ pushes genres which were generally part of underground culture to a broader audience. Features from raptor house pioneer Ms. Nina, fellow Miami-based artists such La Goony Chonga, Nick Leon, INVT, and more all intertwine into the rich and eclectic club-ready sonic landscape MJ’s been crafting using South American rhythms, futuristic sounding melodic elements, and Spanish vocals. MJ Nebreda will continue pushing the sound of neoperreo across the world as she’s set to play the LUAR x EMCEEE Studios party in New York this weekend along with two shows in Europe, Oye Fest in Atlanta, and a Boiler Room in Miami next month. She will also be providing support for singer/songwriter Amber Lucid across various U.S tour dates before wrapping up her stint of shows at Three Points Music Festival in Miami.
