Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has been blooming since her debut as Robin Buckely in the critically-acclaimed TV show. Aside from her acting career, Hawke also makes music, some of which Stranger Things fans have also come to love. The new music video has received praise and uproar from fans as Hawke prepares to release her album Moss later this year.

The music video was directed by Brady Corbet and begins as a group of friends are found by the police having an orgy in the forest. Splitting into multiple perspectives, the chaos soon dies down leaving Maya Hawke handcuffed. In an interview with Dazed, she explains what she wanted to portray:

“the feeling that loneliness is the worst thing, until you realise it’s far superior to bad company; about how free we are as kids and then as we go through puberty and culture crushes down on us and instead of being ourselves, we start to try and be like everyone else”.

She goes on to mention that she and Corbet found inspiration through Kohei Yoshiyuki’s photography. Hawke says that she found his artwork compelling and intriguing to her taste. Using it as inspiration would only help bring her vision to life as she told the story of just some misunderstood kids.

“”In an article on Art News upon his death, it was written that ‘Yoshiyuki’s photographs remind us that the conflict between private and public is timeless, something we all must grapple with in every aspect of our lives’ – that sounded really right to me,”

The amount of thought and precision behind the production of this video is clear and Hawke hopes that,

“it makes them [people] feel something other than shame, self-hatred, and loneliness. I think we are all tired of feeling like that.”
