M.I.A. Makes Rare Appearance on Travis Scott’s ‘Franchise’ Song
Female rapper M.I.A. is back, and recently appeared on Travis Scott’s new song “Franchise” which also features rapper Young Thug. After a hiatus from music since her “AIM” album release in 2016, M.I.A delivers her verse like she’s never left.
In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s “The Zane Lowe Show,” Travis Scott shares why he chose M.I.A. to feature on the song. “She’s just one of my favorite artists as humans,” he said. “So it was just amazing. When I finished [‘Franchise’], I couldn’t think of nobody else that could probably just body this shit. You know what I’m saying? Body this shit like as hard as like anyone else, any other rapper, any other artist.”
In 2016, M.I.A. revealed her fifth studio album “AIM” would be her last. She opened up about retiring from music in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2019. “I want to [retire], and I have said I am,” she said. “And, yes, that is as much as I have to say. It’s time for new people to come through, but that’s very difficult. It’s a very difficult thing. Because actually I think it’s harder now than it was for me 15 years ago, which is crazy. It’s really nuts.”
Despite her hiatus from music, M.I.A. has shifted her focus into other projects such as film. In 2018, she gave fans a closer look into her life and journey as a refugee in her highly anticipated documentary “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.” In an interview with Vice, she mentions her feelings about the responses she has received about her documentary. “It’s kind of weird because on one hand, it covers so much for a music documentary, but on the other hand it’s a very small section of exactly what happened,” she said. “There’s so much that’s not in it.”
It seems as if M.I.A. is making a return to music as “Franchise” follows the release of her single “CTRL” which was announced on her Twitter Sept. 9. She has even created a Patreon and hinted at the release of another studio album earlier this year on her Patreon homepage. “I’m doing a Patreon, because I make so much stuff and record so many things that aren’t music and don’t fit on other platforms,” she said. “I’m still making music, putting out the 6th album which is nearly finished, on a normal label, same as the others.”
