Lexa Gates Gives A New Name to Rap
Lexa Gates is a talented and hardworking singer/songwriter, who will be a delightful surprise for rap fans to discover. Her new single “I Just Can’t Be Alone,” transports listeners back in time as the song seamlessly transitions from blues to rap. Such transitions make for an unexpected yet enjoyable listening experience. The accompanying music video displays a visually artistic and free expression of Gates- as she directed, styled, and edited the video herself. Several scenes display Gates sitting on a couch, dancing in a park, and crouched on the bathroom counter, all with the camera kept completely stationary, allowing the viewer to take in every aspect of the image before them.
From Queens to Los Angeles
Gates, born and raised in Queens, New York, has shown musical expression through singing and songwriting since she was 9. Several years later, Gates “first took her talents to SoundCloud, dropping her debut tracks in 2019, then released full bodies of work, her latest titled, ‘Universe Wrapped In Flesh’.” In that most recent album, songs like “It’s Always Something,” “Mind Your Business,” and “Sfcd” have a slower blues rhythm. Meanwhile, other tracks such as “Delusional” and “The Person That I Was Before,” are slightly more upbeat and fast-paced. Thus far in 2024, Gates has released three singles, “Lately, Nothing,” “Stacy’s Chips,” and, of course, “I Just Can’t Be Alone.” Each single has received great responses from her fans.
Lexa Gates gives rap a whole new meaning, as all of her songs converge with other genres of music. Every track holds something unique and inviting for everyone. In May of this year, Gates performed at The Great Escape in the UK. This festival serves as, “a space to highlight upcoming artists. Previous performers have included: Little Simz, Adele, The Last Dinner Party, Yard Act, Foals, and Lewis Capaldi.” Gates is set to perform at the Echoplex in Los Angeles on August 14th. Fans are on the edge of their seats to see what she has planned.
