London-based girlband FLO are taking the R&B world by storm with their debut EP “The Lead”, released July 8. Reneé Downer, Jorja Douglas and Stella Quaresma make up the trio. The group formed in 2021 and signed with Island Records (Drake, Ariana Grande, Dean Lewis).

Between saying farewell to a deadbeat ex circa “Cardboard Box” to heading out for a girl’s night on the town circa “Summertime”, FLO manages to empower while embracing their own sensuality. Their sound pulls heavily from ’90s R&B and that of the early 2000s.

Their debut single, “Cardboard Box”, has amassed over 5 million streams on Spotify. The single was produced by London-based producer MNEK, whose writing and production credits include Beyoncè, Madonna, Dua Lipa and more. “Cardboard Box” gained traction via Twitter and TikTok, attracting the attention and praise of celebrities including SZA and JoJo. The single’s harmonious groove is reminiscent of the 90s tracks from which the group draws inspiration (think TLC’s “Unpretty”).

“I’ma put your shit in a cardboard box / Changing my number and I’m changing the locks / Never liked your mama so I guess she’s blocked / You may be crying but, boy, I’m not,” FLO sings on the chorus, a bold good riddance to an ex partner.

FLO boasts over 180,000 followers on TikTok (@flolikethis), a following they’ve accumulated through dozens of new music teasers, covers and mini vlogs. Apart from their smooth vocals and easy charm, the band has surged in popularity as they’ve resurrected the Great British Girlband (Spice Girls, Little Mix).

Given their attention from big names in music and steadily growing audience, it’s clear that FLO is a group to keep your eyes on. They’re confident, talented and ready to take on the R&B world.
